Music at Fehérlófia

Donate OnlineLast week we've changed our classroom into a small audio recording studio to let Zsolt play some songs on the keyboard of the youth project and to make a CD out of them. Judy Erdman, our volunteer from Minnesota/USA had donated the piano shortly before going back home. Thank you very much, Judy! The keyboard is in good hands with Zsolt and these nine songs are especially for you!

Letter from Romania

Dear friends and supporters!

A great many good things happened to our teenagers in the recent years. They live in smaller communities and go to school together with children and teenagers from town. They attend the childrens' service at the catholic church. But still, they remain greatly disadvantaged compared to the other teenagers in town.

What they most gravely lack is the binding relationship with their parents and parents' love. I remember how important it was for me as a teenager to have my mother at my side. Thus I was not afraid of replying to opinions and notions that did not comply with my opinion and morals. I was not afraid of being myself because I knew that there was somebody to love my anyway, standing by me even if I would have lost everything else. I could talk with her about the worries and feelings of a small or growing-up girl. And she listened to me, regardless of of her work, her chores and her other 3 children. She comforted me, encouraged me and celebrated my successes with me. She understood me and my life.

Letter to Friends

How did I discover this country of Romania? I was led there—literally—by Ruediger Steinke.

Donate OnlineRuediger and I were hiking on the Superior Trail close to Lake Superior in my home state of Minnesota, USA. Over a glass of red wine one evening, Ruediger suggested why not a hike in the Carpathians, in Transylvania? Two years later in 2004 that is exactly what we did, along with 30 other American hikers, with Ruediger as a leader!
When planning a second hike in 2005, I was asked would I like to do it again? Since I rarely do anything twice I said, no. Ruediger is nothing if not persistent and, in a soft and gentle way, asked if perhaps I’d like to teach English in Romania with a program called Ferhelofia? Yes, I wanted to do that. Because then I would have the opportunity to know a country better than just-being-a-tourist allows.
